Okay breath, unbate yourself – it’s safe to come out now; Britney unveiled the title and cover for her seventh studio album, Femme Fatale. (Source: #justthislittlethingcalledtwitter) So… you can go ahead and exhale that sigh of
(unsubstantiated) disbelief relief now
So… the cover
art is getting grief, I’m a little perplexed as to why though. It’s pretty straightforward: we’ve got a lot of face, basics, and brass tacks. There’s a name, a face, and a title. Don’t scoff, don’t eye roll, don’t worry about the artistic je ne sais quoi – because you do know what. As far as album covers are concerned, she’s been doing it for years. No this comeback cover is not an “Oops,” but yes she did it again, and again, again, and again – and then one more time for good measure. So before the holier-than-thou Pop Critiques extend the collective sense of blasé – let’s not forget she who so eloquently said it best many a fortnight ago…
What you see is what you get. This is me, hey you – if you want me, don’t forget: you should take me as I am ‘Cause I can promise you: Baby, what you see is what you get.
What you see is what you get: it’s Britney, it’s called “Femme Fatale” – literally written out for you in black-and-white #done
So before you give lil’ Miss Kentwood the remedial boot, remember what another one of Louisiana’s finest said… This is Southern, face it: if we too simple, then y’all don’t get the basics
Take one part staple Velvet Underground track; strip down the music to the simple lyrics and the Sedgwick muse
‘Cause everybody knows… she’s a femme fatale
The things she does to please
She’s a femme fatale
She’s just a little tease
She’s a femme fatale
See the way she walks… hear the way she talks.
Add two parts signature breathy Spears oohs, ahhs, smoky inhalations, awaited exhalations, rhythmic respiration over analogue transitions, funky antiquated instrumenation, and a bassline steady enough to bed rock even the smoothest dancefloor criminal …
And you’ve got the makings of quite a fine Femme Fatale… we’ll take that – better yet like Diddy #tapethat
