The Scene: Paris Fashion Week F/W 2011 – Thierry Mugler’s Women’s Wear Runway Show

The Siren: Lady Gaga

The Scope: Lady Gaga and the Women’s Fashion scene have much in common – shock of all shocks –  both are cultural staples, highly-controversial for debated social impact, relevance, and substance – undoubtedly founded upon the vapidity of what they appear to be – but at the same time focal because of their intangible cultural influence: the ability to shift moods, mentalities, trends, and behaviors on both personal and public planes. Moreover, both Gaga and the Parisian women’s fashion scene in particular, are living contradictions – harnessing the political world in the very back pocket of their dainty pantaloons – pulsing the heartbeat of political progress from behind the facade of high-fashion: haute culture. Both are undoubtedly what they wear, and while many would assume that you can’t possibly legislate from beneath the mascara of a pretty face, Paris and Gaga beg to differ. So, in the midst of heightened mainstream recoil and simultaneous reign, nestled in Paris Fashion Week upon anti-scene designer Thierry Mugler’s women’s wear presentation as the stage; naturally, Lady Gaga emerges as the sonic second-coming of the Sans-culottes – pants, politics, and pop, tears and hegemonic fears on tap: Á votre santé, Watergate.

Beneath the beautiful electronic-operatic melange lies the anthem for the underclass living couture; vamping and vocalizing for those free ones  – beyond lost knee britches – rocking no britches, on behalf of the realmed estate-less Third, against the Pop aristocracy’s backlash that Gaga is nothing more than a poor rehash, and cheap pastiche. Then, the classical crashes beneath tawdry cries, said pants drop in tandem with the beat and base of France’s native revolutionary rhythmic Musique concrète, the deepthroated dialogue brings our ear to the door of American politics’ backroom situations – the cries: I can be cool, I can be anything, I’ll be your everything – just touch me baby, the commands: Put your hands on me, John F. Kennedy of the blonde bombshell, the dictations of the chief: Get her on the ground, that girl better turn around, the nocturnal romp from within the Haus of Representatives reviving Marilyn’s posthumous plea… if only for the second chance at shifted policy.

In 140 or Less:

Watch This Space: Pantaloon-dropping for progress, because “Pop done right is political prostitution.” It’s vulgar. It’s real. It’s political. It’s French: a la mode, a la monarchy – work the runway for employment benefits.
